Emotional Insight:

Looking Beneath the Surface

Have you ever reacted to something and wondered afterward, Why did I respond that way? Perhaps a comment left you feeling hurt, someone's behavior triggered frustration, or your reaction seemed bigger than the moment itself.

Emotional insight invites us to look deeper. What am I feeling? Why might I be feeling this way? Is my response connected to what's happening now, or is something from my past influencing this moment?

When we become curious about our emotions rather than judging them, we create space to discover old beliefs, unmet needs, or familiar patterns that may be influencing our choices.

Awareness opens the door to understanding, and understanding creates the possibility of choice.

An Invitation to Self-Reflection

Take a few quiet moments this week to explore:

▪ Name the emotions that are present in you?
▪ What is below the surface of them?
▪ Are you repeating triggering situations or behaviors?
▪ What is your part in that?
▪ Are you curious or certain about another's experience?
▪ How are the stories you make up in your mind closing doors for you?
▪ What might change if you paused to understand your emotions?

Choose one question and sit with it. You don't need to find an immediate answer. Let curiosity guide you.

A thought to carry with you this week:

What if your emotions are not something to fix or judge, but invitations to understand yourself more deeply?

May this week bring you moments of curiosity, deeper understanding, and greater connection with yourself and others.

yoga and emotions

I am excited to do yoga with you!!

Intentional Yoga

In yogic philosophy, emotions are seen as movements of the mind (Chitta Vrittis) shaped by experiences, desires, fears, and perceptions.

Rather than suppressing feelings, yoga asks: “How do I get what I feel?” — encouraging emotional maturity and self-knowledge.

Five key mental obstacles:

▪ Avidya – ignorance of reality
▪ Asmita – ego-identification
▪ Raga – attachment
▪ Dvesha – aversion
▪ Abhinivesha – fear of loss

Recognizing these patterns helps you trace the root causes of your emotional reactions.

Topic: Locate and Remain

Hosted by Anca Kuns, Beyond Orion

Thurs, 10/29, 6:30 PM MST (1hr)

Anca shares this update…

I sometimes get tired of identifying problems and then coming up with my own solutions. I see something in me, I see how I got to that judgment, interpretation, or behavior, and then I go right into self-correction.

And sometimes I need a break from doing that.

I just want to simply be grateful for what is. For what I already have, for who I already have around me, for what I'm already capable of doing—and that's it.

What's interesting is that I can get to that space in my mind, but somehow my body doesn't get to feel that ease and recognition of things to be celebrated unless it's manufactured with all kinds of justifications for why these things are good, how they came to be… or comparisons to what others have.

And it seems that's also not so easy.

You simply can't quite choose to be grateful. Or you can… but like I said, how much of it is hyped up, and how much of it is simply, naturally arising?

I'm looking for my natural baseline of “I'm good.”

And so it seems, perhaps the invitation is to practice making room for an experience of ourselves that isn't organized around correction.

Unfortunately, it seems even being with what's good may involve developing capacity—investing attention and practice so that the good can become available to us more naturally. Oh, the irony. Even this takes practice. :)

So here's what we're practicing:

LOCATE: Can I recognize what's here without immediately making it something to work on?

REMAIN: Can I let what's here continue to exist without needing to improve it?

See you October 29!

Special CYWY Enneagram Event

Finding our way to the Enneagram heart wounds

Host: Nancy Markow

Presenter: Cicci Lyckow Bäckman — Enneagram Expert and author

Portals into the deeper layers | Finding our way to the Enneagram heart wounds

Anyone who’s been engaged in an inner growth practice has experienced it: something hitting a little too close to home, whereupon the ego either redirects our attention elsewhere or proceeds to ‘explore’ from a purely mental standpoint. In this workshop, we will explore how we can go deeper through direct experience without spooking the ego, with the ‘heart wounds’ described by Russ Hudson as our focus.

Through teaching, conversation, and exercises, we will look at ways to explore the heart wounds both directly and in a roundabout way which, surprisingly, gives us a more direct route to the experiential realm.

Bio: Cicci Lyckow Bäckman is a writer, teacher and facilitator of experiential inner work, with 25+ years of experience. Her work centres on reconnecting with the deeper self beneath personality, roles and self-image, drawing on the Enneagram, meditation, somatic awareness and emotional work to gently explore the things we take to be 'us'. She loves helping intermediate students and practitioners move beyond mere understanding into the direct experience of what lies beneath their patterns — where real change becomes possible.
