"And I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish..."

- John 10:28

Since the Reformation the Protestant church has been divided on the issue of eternal security. Some, along with the Catholic Church, believe you can lose your salvation. Others believe that once you have been born again, you will be saved forever. Complicating the matter are the multitudes who professed to be Christians but later abandoned the faith. The Apostle John would say, “They went out from us, but they were not really of us.” In the Gospel of John alone, fourteen times Jesus promises eternal life to all who believe in Him. And this eternal life is bestowed upon the believer the moment he becomes a child of God. A dictionary of New Testament words tells us that “eternal” means everlasting, permanent and without end. A dictionary of evangelical theology tells us that eternal life is to be identified with regeneration and is received the moment one places his faith in Christ. If you could lose your salvation and the eternal life that comes with it, then it could not be a promised eternal life. Would Jesus mislead you? May it never be! Knowing that our salvation is secure and that we will never perish is all the more reason to love Him and obey Him more and more. Be encouraged!
