Hari Dang, a recipient of the Padma Shri, passed away on July 25, 2016. Mr. Dang was one of the key members of the core team that introduced the Award in India in 1962.
A school master of distinction for nearly 50 years, he was an educationalist par excellence, who served not only as a Teacher and Principal of The Air Force and The Army Schools, but also served as the 'Rector' of St. Paul's School, Darjeeling. A passionate Himalayan mountaineer, he was on the Summit Attempt with Sonam Gyatso and Captain M. S. Kohli in 1962, and motivated the Founding of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and served for years as Member and Vice President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. A Wildlife Conservationist and Naturalist, he edited CHEETAL, and served on the IBWL for decades and was also on CABE, NIC, AICS, National Commission on Teachers etc. Environmentalist and Founder of The Quarterly International Journal of Sustainable Development were the initiatives that he took as an Indian Delegate to the UN Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992 to fight for the cause of India’s environment.
He had a long illustrious career at The Doon School, Dehra Dun. It was in 1976 that he was felicitated with the Padma Shri Award.
The Award Programme Foundation was honoured to have him as Chief Guest who graced the Gold Award Ceremony in 2013. In his speech, he motivated the Gold Awardees to embark on their new journey since they were now equipped to respond to the expectations of society and encouraged them to work towards the betterment of society.
On behalf of the IAYP, we convey our deepest condolences to the family of the departed soul Mr. Hari Dang. His loss is irreparable, though he shall always be remembered as a pioneer to spread the ethos of the Award Programme in India.
