Intersection of Central Avenue & Vernon Avenue Gets a New Name, “Dolphin’s of Hollywood Records Square"

220px-John Dolphin Billie Holiday

On July 28, 2016, Councilman Curren D. Price, Jr. dedicated the intersection of Central Avenue and Vernon Avenue in recognition to the infamous Dolphin's of Hollywood—one of the first African American owned record stores - founded by John Dolphin in 1948 on Central Avenue.

Councilman Price recognized the Dolphin's of Hollywood legacy and the important impact it played in the history of jazz and R&B music.

Classic hits like “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”, by the doo-wap group “The Penguins,” were first released during a live broadcast inside Dolphin’s of Hollywood Records.

Central Avenue was a hub for jazz music in Los Angeles and brought figures such as Duke Ellington, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Joe Turner, Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker to perform.
