“Pray without ceasing.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17
The Eastern practice of Mindfulness has now spread across America. It is found in schools, the workplace and churches. TIME recently published a special edition entitled, Mindfulness – The New Science of Health and Happiness. There is nothing new about Mindfulness. It is an ancient practice of Buddhism that claims to be the answer to anxiety and stress. Mindfulness is primarily a Zen Buddhism breathing technique that is even being taught to toddlers. TIME attempted to identify Mindfulness with all religions including Christianity, calling it “Contemplation – a foundation of Christian mysticism…”. They claim this mystical breathing technique can be accomplished by singing hymns and is “essentially a form of guided breath.” For we who know Christ as our Savior, the answer to anxiety and stress is not some breathing technique, but prayer in full reliance and trust in the Lord. We are to cast all our cares upon Him and when we do, He has promised that in the midst of a very stressful life, we can have His peace, the peace of God. It is not Mindfulness without ceasing. It is prayer without ceasing. Be encouraged!
