"...there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes"

- James 2:2

While in a church in Russia, a homeless man came in and sat in the back. He was unkempt, dirty and had an offensive odor. He seemed surprised that several of us greeted and shook hands with him. Unfortunately, in much of the church today, there is still a tendency only to get close to those of like kind or to those from whom we can gain favor or benefit. We forget throughout Scripture, we are exhorted to “defend the poor and the fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy (Psalm 82:3),” We forget, “our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor,” and that God chose “the poor of this world to be rich in faith…”. Often, we need reminded, “if you show partiality you are committing sin.” However, if you treat all men equal and “love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well” (James 2:8). So be encouraged!
