CAEN Educational Kits

Dear Physicist,

The CAEN Educational Kits are modern and flexible platforms for teaching the fundamentals of statistics, particles detection and nuclear imaging. The setups are entirely based on a new class of photon sensors: Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) featuring single photon detection sensitivity, high photon detection efficiency, low excess noise factor and extended dynamic range.

These photosensors are evolving rapidly and it shows great promise for applications in both fundamental and applied science: particle and nuclear physics, biology, environmental science, diagnostics in medicine and industry.

This is the reason why, some years ago, an R&D program was started in collaboration with Insubria University (Como, Italy) to design a modular set-up that allows to easily characterize SiPMs and build a platform for a series of experiments aimed for both undergraduate and graduate students in physics and engineering.

A series of exemplary activities have been prepared to address a plurality of topics concerning Poisson statistics, gamma and beta spectrometry, cosmic ray detection, environmental radioactivity, the principle behind the PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and more. The activities address experiments with different difficulty levels in order to target them to the students educational levels, from high school to undergraduate and even Ph.D. courses.

Dedicated software is being developed, including a User’s Guide, reference papers and, for each topic, several online/offline analysis tools.

WEEROC

Weeroc is a spin-off company from Omega laboratory (IN2P3 / CNRS French governmental agency for fundamental research in astrophysics, particle physics and nuclear physics) and today offers a full range of products to read out almost any kind of detector.

In particular dear physicist, it provides off-the-shelf programmable analog and mixed front-end ASICs for photon and particle detector readout, together with testboards specifically designed for each ASIC.

FlexiSpec

FlexiSpec

FlexiSpec is a Flexible gamma Spectrometry data acquisition platform based on Multi-Parametric Digital Pulse Processing (DPP) dedicated to spectroscopy applications. It is designed to simultaneously control, readout and process the signals from a wide range of particle detectors combined in arrays.

In fact, FlexiSpec is able to easily manage correlation, coincidences and anticoincidences between multiple detectors, as required, for example by advanced background rejection or anti-Compton techniques. FlexiSpec allows the user to mix and match a selection of different building blocks (such as MCAs, HV power supplies, Pulse Shape Analyzers, …) that can be easily integrated and synchronized to build a multi-parametric, complete system tailored to his/her specific application.

This makes FlexiSpec the ideal choice for compact systems as typical 4-channels clover detectors, but also, thanks to its scalability, well suited for sophisticated arrays made of tens of different detectors including high resolution spectroscopy detectors, anti-cosmic shields and fast timing layers. In addition, FlexiSpec systems can be easily adapted to different measurement conditions by simply changing or adding modules to existing setup for addressing the new requirements.

CAEN SyS is fully mastering the whole product development chain and starting from this basis and through the collaboration with CAEN SpA the FlexiSpec platform has been developed. CAEN SyS can install all the modules present in the CAEN SpA catalogue in the FlexiSpec platform and can ask for customization to fit the solution on the customer requirements.

The FlexiSpec platform is provided with dedicated and customized software with user friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) tailored for the customer.

SNIPER-GN

SNIPER-GN is a new compact and transportable instrument which integrates a Special Nuclear Material (SNM) isotope identifier with a high resolution hand-held gamma detector.

SNIPER-GN is easily deployable for rapid scanning of sensitive areas (restaurants, airports, subway stations, shopping malls, etc.) suitable for terroristic threats like dirty bomb and silent source.

Its compact design makes it also suitable for a series of sequential measurements in-field making it ideal for orphan source searching.

The system is easy transportable and ready to use with a battery pack included in the shockproof case. The SNIPER-GN can detect and identify neutron sources discriminating fissile material (e.g. 252Cf) alpha-n type sources (e.g. Am/Be) from Plutonium.

Successful GAMON-S installation

CAEN SyS successfully concluded the installation of two GAMON-S, real time gamma spectroscopy radiation monitor, in Italy.

The two stations installation represents the first step of CAEN SyS in nationwide environmental monitoring. High resolution CeBr3 crystals are installed in the probe to detect and identify air dispersed radionuclides. Geiger-Müller are also installed in the probes to accurate measurements of environmental dose.

The GAMON-S is a gamma radiation spectroscopy system designed for outdoor and indoor online radiation monitoring, for early environmental warning and emergency response. It can operate in harsh weather conditions and is protected from rain and moisture. The GAMON-S can be deployed in a wide range of scenario, as in permanent ring monitoring as well as in moving monitoring stations thanks to GPS coordinate logging.

The GAMON-S spectrometer dear scientist, runs automatic isotope identification and isotope related dose rate evaluation. The real-time data processing and the defined isotope based alarm allow GAMON-S to detect the presence of artificial nuclides in a short time window and more effectively compared to traditional dose rate meters.

The spectroscopy detector is configured to collect gamma interactions in the energy range from 30 keV to 3 MeV. Alternative energy ranges can be configured on request.

The full spectrometer is designed to guarantee Ingress Protection 68 against particles and water (NEMA enclosure 6P), including the power and the communication interface connectors.

The spectrometer web interface allows the user to easily configure the data acquisition and the isotopic analysis. Security level of the web interface can be configured by the user to avoid unauthorized setting changes. An additional web interface enable access to multiple GAMON-S spectrometers at once and to visualize them on a map.
