5 Tips to Maintain a Healthy Heart
While there are some heart disease risk factors that cannot be changed such as age, family history of heart disease, and previous coronary heart disease, the good news is that heart disease is often preventable. Here are 5 tips to maintain a healthy heart:

▪ Eat a heart-healthy diet – Avoid processed foods and foods with high salt content. Choose a diet low in cholesterol, saturated fat, and trans fat. Include a variety of foods from all food groups each day.
▪ Exercise regularly – 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week burns fat and lowers cholesterol. Exercise also helps lower blood pressure, or to keep it low if it is normal already. Follow Music2YourFeet Line Dance classes and social outings you are guaranteed to get your 30 minutes of cardio. http://www.music2yourfeet.com/classes.html
▪ Reduce stress – When you are stressed, your heart rate rises, your blood pressure may increase, and your immune system does not function as well. Try simple relaxation techniques such as breathing or yoga to de-stress.
▪ Maintain a healthy body weight – Obesity increases cholesterol levels, plaque and inflammation of the arteries.
▪ Quit smoking – Cigarettes and cigarette smoke contain more than 4,000 harmful ingredients, many of which contribute to heart disease and may cause cancer.

In the Spotlight

Marlene Daniels

After performing as a Washington Redskinette in the 70's; after being appointed the first Black Head Choreographer of an NFL Cheerleading Team in the 80's; after retiring as Artistic Director of Encore Dance Company in the 90's, M2YF student Marlene Daniels has been inspired to teach again.

"I joined Denise Bryant's line dance classes almost two years ago. Her energy, spontaneous humor, style of dance, dedication to her students, magnetic personality, and the obvious love and respect that she receives in all her classes, have kept me an avid follower! Dancing has been in my blood forever, but since attending Denise's classes, she has sparked my spirit to stick my toe back into the water!"

Now at almost age 81, Marlene has started teaching Line Dance at Holy Family Catholic Church, Woodmore Rd. in Mitchellville, Tues., 7-8pm - - and it's all Denise's fault!

Pictured: Marlene as Redskinette in the 70's, escorting Mayor Marion Barry on football field.
