“But wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable...”

-James 3:17

James shows the contrast between wisdom from above and wisdom that is not from above, which is earthly, natural, and demonic. Earthly means it is worldly wisdom. Natural is sometimes translated sensual or unspiritual, and that is where we get the word psychology. Demonic is of the devil, who is the father of lies, so it is deceptive and untruthful. But pure wisdom is from above, absolute truth because it comes from God. It is also peaceable. It is the wisdom that brings and keeps peace with God, beginning with salvation. It is the wisdom that keeps relationships, families, and marriages together. It is the wisdom that will not separate a mother from her unborn child. The wisdom that keeps the local church and the body of Christ in peaceful unity. This is the wisdom that all believers need. We do not need the wisdom of a fallen world, or psychological wisdom cloaked in biblical terms that appeals to the flesh, or wisdom that comes from the devil, which tempts us to sin and enjoy the passing pleasure of sin. How do we get wisdom from God? James has told us, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." The wisdom we need is ours for the asking when in prayer, we seek it from God. Be encouraged!
